I, just like all of you, am also an end user. I have a Belgium/Qtr Cross, a full size donkey and my mini. And am also watching my pennies. I feed Coastal hay, and Seminole's Leisure 12.
Does it really save you money if you need to feed 2x's the amount your currently feeding? The answer is NO. The per bag price is NOT what you need to look at.
You must always consider the 'as fed cost'.
For this comparison, I am using a 1000# horse, under light work, and is consuming 1% - 1.5% of his body weight per day in forage. (approx 10 - 15#)
Purina Omolene 100
10% Protein
4.5% Fat
Average price per bag $16 - $17
Cost per pound $.32 - .34
FRM 10% All Grain
10% Protein
3% Fat
Average price per bag $10 - $11
Cost per pound $.20 - .22
If we go by just the purchase price, the FRM product will surely catch your eye. BUT you must look deeper.
Going by the bag tags of each product the horse will consume the following:
Purina Omolene 100
http://www.horse.purinamills.com/products/omolene/ECMD2-0032695.aspx
3.5# per day
Cost per day $1.12 - $1.19
Monthly total cost $33.60 - $35.70
FRM 10% All Grain
http://frmfeeds.com/80712/35512.html
15# per day
Cost per day $3.00 - $3.30
Monthly total cost $90 - $99
WOW.... So now the per day cost looks more appealing!
Plus we haven't even analyzed the actual ingredients.
Feeding the 'lower' cost feed will actually cost you $90-$99 per month, or you could feed a better quality product and SAVE lots of money each and every month.
If you ever have any questions regarding your feeding plan, feel free to come by and see me, or email me. I will be more than happy to help you determine the best fit for both you and your horses.
